Skin care

When we age, our bodies experience many natural changes that affect our appearance and function. One of the first things we notice is our skin.

The production of collagen and elastin decreases and causes elasticity loss. It also becomes thinner and more prone to dry out. Additional factors determine the aging of our skin: it can be heredity, or it can be external factors such as sun exposure or weather conditions.

As we notice these changes, it’s important to adjust our skincare routine accordingly. There are steps we can take to reduce the effects of aging. Here are some scientifically-proven, tried and true skincare tips to revitalize and protect our skin.

Wash Gently

When bathing, use warm water instead of hot water. Washing too much or taking hot baths can cause dryness and itchiness. Keep your bath short, and when you’re done, pat dry. You can leave a little water to help hydrate while you moisturize afterward.

When shopping for products, replace soap bars and alcohol-based products with mild, fragrance-free cleansers, alcohol-free hand sanitizers or emollients. If you want to get a soft and glowing skin with argan oil or other oil-based products, make sure to use it outside of the bath. Any oils should be handled with care and kept to a minimum to avoid the risk of slips and falls.

Moisturize Often

Use a creamy, fragrance-free moisturizer specifically designed for dry and itchy skin. You can apply it after bathing, throughout the day, and before you go to bed. If you want to up your skincare routine to treat and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, use an overnight facial cream so that you wake up with a softer, fresher feel.

Stay Hydrated

Your moisturizer can only do so much. Hydrate from the inside out by meeting your recommended daily intake of water and other healthy fluids. Not only will your skin thank you, but it contributes to your overall health and wellbeing.

Eat for Your Health

It’s no secret that there’s a link between nutrition and skin health. Consume a diet that’s rich with nutrients such as healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins A and C. It provides the ultimate defense against free radicals, promotes hydration, and boosts collagen production.

Wear Protection

As we age, our skin is more prone to bruising, infections, and sun damage. These common issues can be prevented by wearing gloves when doing household tasks such as cleaning or gardening. A hat and sun protection garments are ideal for covering up if you plan on being outside, even on a cloudy day.

Be Sun-smart

Wrinkles, age spots, and blotches of discoloration are caused by or made worse with sun exposure. Stay out of the sun whenever you can, preferably between 10 in the morning and 4 in the afternoon.

Wear a water-resistant sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from blemishes or the risk of developing skin cancer. Make sure to apply it half an hour before you go out, and reapply as needed. Avoid any form of artificial tanning as it can be even more harmful than natural light.

Don’t Smoke!

Smoking damages your skin in numerous ways; it causes wrinkles and otherwise speeds up the aging process. When you smoke, the blood vessels in the outer layer of skin narrow, and this reduces blood flow – depleting the skin of necessary nutrients and circulation. Collagen and elastin are damaged by smoking as well.

Invest in a Humidifier

Heating, air conditioning, or dry arid areas can cause your skin to feel dry and itchy. Use a humidifier when the air feels dry to replenish indoor humidity. Ideally, you want the humidity levels of your home to be between 45% and 60%, which you can measure with a hydrometer. It can be found at your local hardware or home improvement store.

See a Dermatologist

With age, your risk of developing skin cancer and pre-cancerous growths increase. Stay on top of your health by seeing a dermatologist for exams and screening. They can answer any questions you may have about the changes you’re undergoing.
