October 19th is Psoriatic Arthritis Day. Psoriatic arthritis is a form of arthritis that is linked to psoriasis. It causes pain and swelling in the joints and in some cases can cause deformed joints. Not everyone who gets psoriasis will end up with psoriatic arthritis. Depending upon the part of the world you live in, estimates range from four to thirty percent. The cause of psoriatic arthritis is still unknown. It is thought to be caused by a combination of genetics, the environment and your immune system.
How to Manage Psoriatic Arthritis
- Watch your diet. It isn’t so much what you eat but how much you eat that matters. Losing excess weight will help to take pressure off your joints.
- Try exercising. Not all types of exercise work for everyone. Find out which ones work for you. It could be walking, swimming or yoga. Find something that is easy on your joints.
- Keep in touch with your doctor. Find out what is available to help with your symptoms. Take your prescribed medication.
- Take the time to take care of yourself. You may need special lotions and shampoos. Don’t neglect yourself because you feel you don’t have the time. Keep your symptoms under control by looking after your needs.
- Speak with others. Your family and friends may not understand psoriatic arthritis. Explain to them that psoriatic arthritis it is not contagious but that you do need to take special care of yourself.
Psoriatic arthritis affects a very small percentage of the population. Living with it can be difficult but there are things you can do to make your life more comfortable. Get enough rest and dress in comfortable clothing. Foot and ankle problems as well as swollen toes are common so be sure to invest in well fitting footwear.
